Glitch art response

The videos about glitch art were very interesting and informative. I've seen glitch art in the past but never thought too deeply about what it actually is or how it is created. I love that glitch art is just made by experimenting. Everything you do is a surprise to how the image will turn on so it is hard to be purposeful which makes it a very unique art form. Just like the man in the video said, glitch is the unexpected.

The video tutorials and the demo in class seemed fairly easy to follow along to. I like that this art form is something you can do on pretty much any computer or application. I also found it really interesting that in the videos the man talked about the political side of glitch art. His example of the Facebook story was very eye-opening. Trying to data bend for glitch art is almost a form of rebellion against these apps.

    Hi Meg:

I have tried many times to manipulate photos using several Windows text editors, etc., without success. The default tools available on a Windows computer do not seem to work for creating glitch art. I found a write-up online about glitch art on Windows computers: http://www.certainly-strange.com/?p=548 . An aspiring glitch artist will need to download a program or programs not part of the default Windows installations to be able to manipulate the files.

  2. Thanks for the added research, Vanessa. Yes, Meg, the practice of glitch is certainly hit or miss, which is both liberating and frustrating. It is experimentation with material, with a rebellious connotation for sure, but it also yields many unsuccessful or uninteresting results along the way. I have less experience playing with this practice on Windows systems, so no need to get it to work right on your setup. We're simply starting out with this topic for its conceptual value in regards to digital literacy and cross-platform thinking, and we do not need to get it to work if our systems are not cooperating. Yes, it is so important to recognize the power of this kind of practice in the face of enormous private entities, like Facebook, that are increasingly positioned as the gatekeepers of communication. The artist's job as cultural critic is so noble and important in this context!
